Are People Born Gay?

In Sunday School, we broached a topic that is somewhat controversial in the Christian community.  The topic of Homosexuality is avoided like the plague in our churches.  I believe that if we have the truth in the Scripture, then we should not hide from proclaiming that truth.  Does that Bible have something to say about the idea of homosexuality?  And if it does, are people born gay?

Are People Born Gay?

I think the populous answer in the Christian community to this question is a resounding, NO!  Most, I assume, argue that God would not “knit together” someone in a way that contrary to the teachings of Scripture.  God has defined gay and lesbian behavior as an abomination in Leviticus 18 and a detestable thing in Leviticus 20.  If so, then there is no way that God would make someone gay.

I would like to suggest that in fact people are born gay.  Without going into the science of the issue, let me suggest a couple points to consider.

  • There is no genetic factor that indicates homosexuality.  One’s sexual behavior does not seem to be connected to genetics.
  • There is evidence to suggest that the brains of gay and lesbian people differ from those that are heterosexual.  The current cultural trends seems to argue that these changes in brain physiology occur in utero.

Because of brain chemistry, it is possible for males to be born with brains that work more similar to women brains.  And for a women to be born with a brain that functions more similar to a man.  The development of the brain is gender neutral and it is hormone baths at key points during the process that determines the “maleness” or “femaleness” of the brain.

The point is that a person can be born and have a brain that functions in a way as to make them attracted to the same sex.  It is highly possible that in a fallen world, a person can be born with characteristics that make them predisposed to gay and/or lesbian preferences.

If I’m born gay, then I’m gay.

If one is born with a gay or lesbian predisposition, then are we to make every effort to accommodate this behavior?  If a person is born gay, should we as Christians defend the gay and lesbian lifestyle? NO!

Paul ask this question in Romans when he says shall we continue in sin so that Grace may abound? May it never be.  In Romans 1, the Apostle Paul outlines for us the process that occurs in the mind and heart of someone on the path to homosexuality.  It begins when one suppresses the truth of God in unrighteousness.  The truth that has been revealed to all through HIS creation.  His invisible attributes are clearly seen by the things that HE has made.  When this truth is denied, they think themselves to be wise, they become fools.  The Biblical definition of a fool is someone who does not believe there is a God.

When this has happened, the Scriptures tell us that God turns them over to a “reprobate mind” to do those things that are unnatural.  Men doing sexual acts with other men and women doing the same.  This is the logical progression for sexual behavior when the TRUTH of God is denied.  The sexual act is perverted and the behavior is a “detestable act.”

But if one is born gay . . .

The issue is not, are they born gay?  The issue is are they living in sin.  Having a predisposition to a behavior is not an excuse to engage in the behavior.  We are all born that way.  We are all born with a sin nature, having a predisposition to engage in sinful acts of all kinds.  Some are less “sinful” than others, or so we would like to believe.

In Romans 1, at the end of the chapter, Paul begins to list the types of behavior that people who have been turned over to “reprobate minds” would engage.  They include murder, slander, greed, envy, as well as disobedient to parents.  In the same list as murder and homosexuality, Paul, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit of God, includes disobedience to parents.

We all are predisposed to sin.  We all engage in behavior that is against the character and nature of God.  It is all like filthy rags.  Are people born gay? Yes.  We are all born sinners.  But that is not an excuse to sin.

  1. Hello Alan,

I believe that even if your brain can evolve in uterus, that feelings can have an effect even at that age. But have they found a newborn to experiment on to say this? I think there are circumstances in life that can cause a person/child to start a habit of thinking that makes changes to the brain. That a vulnerable teen could be persuaded by others that s/he has this tendency. In 1 Corinthians it states that those with these actions will not make it into heaven, but that we once were so but now our identity is in Christ. When ever I used to go to Codependent Anonymous meetings we had to say we were Codependent. But now I hope to say that though I deal with illnesses and sin in my life that those do not define me.

But I do want to separate the issue of state sponsored marital benefits from church sponsored moral guidelines. As one becomes a Christian, and God leads them in their Christian growth, the church can be helpful in resolving those issues in their life. I think the church should maintain it’s own values, but show the love of God to persons who differ in their perspective, as many of us still secretly have our own needs for reshaping.

I do believe that as a multicultural, fair nation we do need to add marital protections for all adults though.

  2. I do not disagree with your position that circumstances in life can “cause a person/child to start a habit” and I would agree that there are effects on brain function. The problem is that the brain forms in the womb and does not change once it is developed. The brain, unlike other parts of the body, does not have the ability to grow or modify once embryological development has finished. The brain you are born with is the brain you die with.
By way of illustration, when someone experiences a brain injury, such as a stroke. There is a portion of the brain that dies and it is never recovered. The brain does not regenerate or change significantly, once development has set the neurons.
The issue of marriage rights to gay and lesbian community is a totally separate issue. And one that I intend to write on soon. But one point to make is that homosexuality IS a moral issue, not a civil rights issue and should be treated as such. Marriage is a civil rights issue and should not be made a moral one.

  3. Alan, you have no idea how much I love you man……………..

And I am very proud to see the kind of man you have turned out to be.

Now, for my views on this topic.

I agree with your opinions in that men and women can be born with a tendency towards homosexuality, and I appreciate you daring to broach the subject in an open forum.

I also agree wholeheartedly that it is NOT part of God’s design or plan for creation, and is in fact a sin. However, for me personally, I have chosen to assume a position of Christ our Saviour on this topic, “Let He who is without Sin, Cast the first stone.”

There are a multitude of reasons that i will quickly stand up and voice an opinion when I believe someone is doing something wrong, but homosexuality is one that in recent years, I have decided to let it be a personal matter, and allow God to take whatever judgement He decides in the afterlife.

And you already voiced one of those reasons, predisposition. The rest of my decision is based on the Love I have in my own heart for someone in my life that is in fact Gay. He and I were great friends all our lives and after school, went our seperate paths, crossing from time to time. I am exceeding happy for him and the life he has, and can honestly say that other then his sexual choice, have never had a bad word to say about the man. He is open and honest about who he is, lives an otherwise upstanding life, and is a dear friend of mine.

When he decided to openly admit his choices, I had to take a step back and look at my own choices, and found that somehow, all along I knew he was gay. And it didn’t bother me then, how could I condemn him now? After some serious soul searching, and a few sleepless nights in prayer, It hit me square in the face………. It isn’t my place to condemn him anyway, but to love my friend, support him as best I could without comprimising myself, and to show him the love of Christ no matter what he did.

I could go on and on about this, but that wasn’t my intention from the start. I just wanted to tell you I am proud of you, that I agree with a lot of your opinions, and wanted to add my 2 cents on the subject. In this matter I have taken the position of a living Christ, to love unconditionally, offer support where needed, and never turn my back on a friend in need. You are one of the few folks on the planet that know how hard it was for ME to make a decision like that, but in my heart, I know it was the right one……………………………..

I’ll be following this blog, I like it, keep it up Cuz……….

  5. As a child I that had not truthfully come to a personal relationship with God, I was confused in my sexual interest. Now as an adult, I had submitted my will to be pleasing To God by changing my behavior which meant changing that seed in my head; the seed is the thought in which all things grow. As difficult as this was, I have found that it is only as difficult according to the resistances I had toward God. If I want to be pleasing to God, I must want that more than anything that gratifies my selfish whims.

  7. Romans Road to Salvation.
    They are principally Romans 3:23; 6:23, 5:8, and 10:9, 10,13.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
    Rom 3:10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;
Rom 3:12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
Rom 3:9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
Rom 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
Luke 12:5 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Rev. 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
Romans 10: 9 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
Re 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
May Gods Blessings upon you and your family. The Lord said, ”when we are chosen out of our family if we pray for them He will draw them near!

The bible states “if you die with sin on your heart” you’ll parish. You will thrown in the lake of fire with the murderers and pedophiles even if you think you’re a good person ! If you have violated any of Gods laws (The Ten Commandments) and have not asked for forgiveness… you should have a conversation with God! What are Gods Laws? Here is the list.
The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17 NKJV)
#1 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.
#2 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My Commandments.
#3 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
#4 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
#5 “Honor your (earth) father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
    #6“You shall not murder.
#7 “You shall not commit adultery. Looked at another person in lust!
#8 “You shall not steal. Nor take anything that does not belong to you!
#9 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
#10 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” Click here to see Video’s of what will happen to you if you die today with sin on your heart! 8. I was broken until I had an encounter with a savior that healed my brokenness after 40 years. I was gay for 40 years and looked for love in all the wrong places, people and things! God changed me knowing I could not save myself. Now denying myself is what is required of me. My faith in the Lord Jesus Christ has grown because of my encounter with Him.
    Thank you.
