A series on the site has been about other religions and faiths. We have just finished a look at Mormonism and had a good discussion in Sunday School. I wanted to highlight a few additional teachings of the Mormon Church and offer a little more commentary.
Mormonism: A Cult
A cult is a religious system that deviates significantly from orthodox, fundamental teachings of Christianity. Since Mormonism has significant differences in theology and doctrines, they are best referred to as a cult and not part of the Christian community.
Heresy: Jesus Conception
Mormon teaching is that Jesus was conceived via a physical sexual union between God the Father and Mary. This is how Jesus received both his deity and human nature. Brigham Young said that Jesus was not “begotten by the Holy Ghost.” (Journal of Discourse, volume 1, pp 51)
- “Now the birth of Christ was as follows. When His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit…for that which was conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 1:18,20).
- “Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’. And the angel answered and said to her ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you’” (Luke 1:34-5).
Heresy: Jesus’ Origin
Mormonism teaches that Jesus is the first “begotten son” of God. Meaning that Jesus is literally the first spiritual offspring of a sexual relationship between God the Father and his wife. Jesus is the first born of all God’s children, including you and me and Lucifer, the Devil.
- “For in Him all things were created, both in the heavens and the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Col. 1:16).
- “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…the Word became flesh and dwelt among us [Jesus]” (Jn. 1:1,18).
In my short study of Mormonism, the one truth I have found is that this religion is heresy. Nearly ALL of the doctrines and teachings of the church are in error and do not align with the teachings of the Bible.
They use the same terms as Christianity, but they have been redefined to mean something completely different. Do not be deceived! This is cult full of heretical teachings and the Christian should be aware.
